Design

Website

Great website design for companies that are massive or have a massive product line or information library can be daunting. How do you stay personable while exhibiting products and or information that favor the expansive inventory at Walmart?

Why I have chosen this site as a great design example:

  • The eye is easily guided through the site by using good color contrast.
  • Big versus little on content that is considered more significant.
  • The white spaces are clean.  This keeps the site elegant and balanced.
  • The site has personality due to the illustration.  This illustration follows you onto other pages and is illustrated in a way that helps the user conceptualize the topic.
  • Navigation- there is little to no room for misunderstanding here.  'Where can you go' and 'where are you now' are clearly defined.

Some other words that come to mind:

Great Alignment * Clarity * USABILITY * Consistency * Enjoyable

I wanted to exhibit a company that had a large amount of information to communicate.  I feel that even though Human Resources isn't a sexy or comical topic it can still be distributed in a way that is congenial.  The design and language would be key factors in making that a possibility.

Another large reason I chose this design...it was made by a local company!

I have many additional thoughts that I would love to discuss with you.

SXSW Mobile Application

I stumbled on to this and I felt it was a good opportunity to share a thought I had when we last met.   Many of us have smart phones and we 'smart users' like to access much of our lives on the go.  I enjoyed the design on this mobile interface because it exhibited many of the the things I mentioned above.  It is clean, fun, offers relevant information, and is easy to use.

I understand that not all HR communication could be related here, however it is good way to stay connected.  The content could be a bit more versed.  This way we have established that HR is not as boring and drab as we once proclaimed it was and then start making it a more social and 'rewarding' experience.

This could become a larger conversation.  We have the question of mobile website vs. mobile application.

Some of my thoughts on what could be offered on the mobile interface.

  • Calendar
  • Latest Campus News
  • Local Weather
  • Twitter-Vanderbilt HR twitter account.
  • Blogs (meaning a breakdown of Vanderbilt affiliated blogs both fun and academic)
  • Map (seems that a vandy map would be helpful)
  • Latest HR News
  • Entertainment at Vanderbilt
